Masters 2024: Following his Second Green Jacket victory, Scottie Scheffler Sheds tears

Scottie Scheffler, the Masters champion, expresses his unwavering commitment to pursuing victories, even though he acknowledges that golf will soon take a backseat in his life.

Scheffler emerged triumphant with a commanding four-shot lead over Ludvig Aberg of Sweden at Augusta National on Sunday.

In the coming weeks leading up to the upcoming US PGA Championship, Scheffler and his wife are eagerly anticipating the arrival of their first child.

“I will remain focused and attentive,” said the American.

“I still enjoy the thrill of competition. I thoroughly enjoy being victorious. It’s frustrating to experience defeat.

After winning a second Green Jacket, golf was no longer his top priority. Instead, the 27-year-old’s mind was occupied by his heavily pregnant wife Meredith, who remained at home in Texas.

“My mind is solely focused on returning home. “It’s a remarkable moment for us,” expressed the top-ranked individual.

“I will go home, savour this triumph, and relish the arrival of my first child. I can’t wait to celebrate with Meredith – it’s been a long week without her.

“My focus will shift in the near future. My son or daughter will be my top priority, along with my wife, so golf will now take a backseat,” he added, before mentioning the role his Christian faith played in his victory.

Scheffler continues to dominate the golf world, securing his third win in the last four tournaments and adding another major title to his impressive collection, alongside his 2022 Masters triumph.

Ever since claiming that initial Green Jacket, Scheffler has established himself as the top player in the world. Throughout 2023, he dominated in nearly every aspect of the game, displaying unmatched skills. Unfortunately, his well-known struggles with putting prevented him from turning more of his impressive 18 consecutive top-12 finishes into victories.

In March, his fortunes took a turn for the better as he emerged victorious in the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He then went on to achieve a remarkable feat by becoming the first player to win back-to-back Players Championship titles. This impressive form carried over to the Masters tournament.

With this victory, Scheffler has now achieved the remarkable feat of winning both the PGA Tour’s prestigious Players title and the Masters in the same season, a feat previously accomplished only by Tiger Woods.

According to Ted Scott, his caddie who has previously won this title with Bubba Watson, Scheffler is truly exceptional in his own unique way.

“When he contacted me, I had no clue about his exceptional skills,” remarked Scott. “He doesn’t seem to have any vulnerabilities.”

Scheffler successfully fended off the competition from Aberg, Morikawa, and Homa in the final round of the Masters.

Aberg’s rapid ascent in the game is truly remarkable, considering that he only began his professional career a mere 10 months ago. Since then, he has achieved success in various events on both the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, showcasing his talent and contributing to Europe’s Ryder Cup triumph over the United States in Rome.

Surprisingly, this marked his debut in a major championship.

The 24-year-old briefly matched Scheffler for the lead after an incredible birdie putt at the ninth hole, only to have his hopes crushed when he landed in the water on the 11th.

Despite the unfortunate double-bogey, he quickly bounced back by birdieing the 13th and 14th holes, securing a three-stroke lead over the competition in third place.

“I was quite anxious, trembling slightly on the first tee,” Aberg admitted.

“Although hitting it in the water on hole 11 wasn’t ideal, we remained focused and continued playing.” That’s been the focus of our efforts, with my caddie Joe [Skovron] and our team. Stay focused and keep pushing forward, regardless of the circumstances.

“Like many others in my position, I aspire to become a major champion and reach the top of the world rankings. I share the same ambitions as many in this pursuit.”

“It’s been like that ever since I first started playing golf.” This week confirms that many of those things are present.

“Scottie is an exceptional player and his consistent performance speaks for itself. He brings out the best in us – and he motivates you to surpass him.
