More than 40 people have died in Kenya after a dam burst following heavy rains and flooding, officials have reported.
In Kamuchiri settlement in western Kenya, the dam burst, sweeping away homes and cutting off highways.
“Forty-two dead, it’s a conservative estimate. There are still more in the mud,” Nakuru county governor Susan Kihika told AFP news agency.
In the past month, floods that devastated regions of Kenya have claimed the lives of over 100 people.
According to local media sources, rescue crews are searching for survivors in the community close to Mai Mahiu, a tiny town approximately 60 kilometres (37 miles) from Nairobi, by sifting through the mud.
