8 Sean John You may know him as Diddy, or Puffy, or Sean Puffy Combs, or Sean John… well he created a cross over empire from high end fashion and streetwear in 1998. the company exceeded 525 million annually and Sean John was awarded CFDAs Mens designed of the year in 2004. in 2008 they bough Enyce, which was another popular urban wear brand, and in 2010 they expanded to Macys. The brand seemed to struggled after that finding it difficult to cater high end styles and prices that were not really what the streetwear influenced.
7 Rocawear Founded by Jay Z and Damon Dash in 1999, the brand had star power. instead of a urban brand trying to get a celeb rocking the products, the celeb created it, and it was successful. at its peak , sales hit 700 million and Kanye West rocked it, Victoria Bechham Fat Joe and others. in 2006 as his fall out with Damon Dash occurred, Jay sold the brand for 204 million in 2007. The brand is still around today, but it is not as relevant.
6 Fubu Founded in 1992 by Daymond John and others, it started with a line of Hats in Queens NY. in 1995 Samsung invested in Fubu and in 1998 the sales peaked at 350 million annually. the face of FUBU was LL Cool J as I remember it but once the word got out that the brand stood for “For us By us” it was a double edged sword. It limited the consumer base to those that were mainly proud to be african american, and alienated those that were not, but loved the hip hop culture. When choosing a streetwear brand, it was easy to choose the item next to fubu since we didnt feel like we belonged.
5 Tommy Hilfiger Another company that was not intended for streetwear, it was more for that preppy lifestyle but embraced by hip hop a a sort of “we can rock that too” mentality. and when Snoop Dogg wore a Hilfiger sweatshirt during an appearance on Saturday Night Live in the 1990s, it sold out of New York City stores the next day. it was embraced by Tommy as Coolio and Diddy walked in his fashion shows even. Hilfiger had its ups and downs but is still relevant in todays market, earning 6.7 billion in 2014. B. Billion.
4 Karl Kani this brand was officially launched in 1994 for 500K, and was one of many new comers to the urban streetwear scene and featured the baggy jean look, he had a signature metal and leather plate to his product that he created to keep the replicas away, and this ended up being his top seller, i even had some boots with the metal plate, and it gave him a signature to the market and differentiated him a bit.

2 Phat Farm launched by the once Iconic Russel Simmons who co-founded Def jam Records (Beastie Boys, Public Enemy and RunDMC). the clothing brand launched in 1992 and he actually lost 10 million in the first 6 yrs, but then in it really took off, and his new worth was 300 million. In1999 Baby Phat collections which catered to the entire family, the brand was carried in over 3000 stores in the US. in 2004 Simmons sold the brand for 140 million
1 Ecko Unlimited Founded by Mark Echo in 1993 this brand was based in graffiti artwork and had gained mainstream success in the early 2000s and in 2009 they had over 1 billion in global revenue ans was the largest brand in streetwear in the world. The rhino was in iconic logo. What I loved about the brand is the creative designs on tee shirts. I probably had 15 tees back then. Mark Echo sold the company in 2013. and Fun fact if you didnt know, in 2002 Mark founded Complex Magazine
