Changes That You Should Know About This Years A-Level Qualifications

#WeGotYourBack #WeGotItCovered #BreakingNews #BBCNews #UK #England #Wales #NorthernIrland #Education #ALevels ASLevel #ResultsDay  #Changes #EducationSecretary #MichaelGovewith

Thousands of teenagers across England, Wales and Northern Ireland are receiving their A-and AS-level results today. But, in England, there have been changes to this year’s A-level qualifications – the BBC News website sets out the changes.

What is different about this year’s A-levels in England?

Under the new system, students sit all A-level exams at the end of two years of study, instead of taking modular exams throughout the course.

AS-level results no longer count towards A-level grades. No subject will have more than a 20% coursework component and most courses will be assessed entirely through exams.

Resits will still be available, but January exams will be scrapped, so students will have to wait until May/June of the following year for a chance to improve their grades.

Why was this change brought in?

The change was brought in by the former Education Secretary Michael Govewith, the intention of making the exams more “fit for purpose” – or harder.

The new AS- and A-levels syllabuses have been phased in across schools in England from September 2015.

The DfE says: “The content for the new A-levels has been reviewed and updated. Universities played a greater role in this for the new qualifications than they did previously.”

What is happening to AS-levels?

The AS-level is being decoupled from the A-level, which means it operates as a stand-alone qualification and the results do not count towards A-level grades – although in Wales and Northern Ireland, they will still count towards an overall A-level mark.

Provisional figures from the Department for Education show that the number of entries for AS subjects has fallen by 42% this summer.

Association of School and College Leaders general secretary Geoff Barton said it “sounded the death knell for AS-levels”.

“The great benefit of the old system was that it gave students a broader range of knowledge and allowed them to keep their options open for longer,” he said.

“The decision to decouple these qualifications was an entirely unnecessary reform, which is narrowing the curriculum and reducing student choice.”

Which subjects are being phased in when?

This year, new A-level qualifications were taken in:

  • art and design
  • biology
  • business
  • chemistry
  • computer science
  • economics
  • English language
  • English language and literature
  • English literature
  • history
  • physics
  • psychology
  • sociology

Next summer, candidates will sit the new A-level qualifications in the following subjects:

ancient languages (classical Greek, Latin)

  • dance
  • drama and theatre
  • geography
  • modern foreign languages (French, German, Spanish)
  • music
  • physical education
  • religious studies

In the summer of 2019, new exams will be sat in:

  • accounting
  • ancient history
  • ancient languages (biblical Hebrew A-level only)
  • classical civilisation
  • design and technology
  • electronics
  • environmental science
  • film studies
  • further mathematics
  • geology
  • government and politics
  • history of art (A-level only)
  • law
  • mathematics
  • media studies
  • modern foreign languages (Arabic, Bengali, Gujarati, Greek, Japanese, modern Hebrew, Panjabi, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Turkish, Urdu)
  • modern foreign languages (Chinese, Italian, Russian)
  • music technology
  • philosophy
  • statistics

Egg Contamination Scare Hits UK, After Around 700,000 Dutch Eggs Enter The UK

#WeGotYourBack #WeGotItCovered #BreakingNews  #SkyNews #London #UK #Food #Eggs #ContaminationScare #FoodStandardsAgency #Sainbury’s #Morrisons #Waitrose #Asda#ProductsWithdrawn#Fipronil

Around 700,000 eggs from Dutch farms linked to a contamination scare have been sent to the UK – far more than the 21,000 first estimated.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said products affected in the UK were likely to be processed foods that contained eggs among other ingredients.

Several products, including salads, sold at Sainbury’s, Morrisons, Waitrose and Asda have been withdrawn.

:: List of the products being withdrawn

The FSA said investigations indicated it was “very unlikely” that the eggs posed a risk to public health.

Some of the products containing the eggs had a short shelf life and will have already been consumed, the FSA said.

However, other foods were still within the expiry date and are now being withdrawn from sale.

The eggs come from farms implicated in the use of the insecticide Fipronil, used in veterinary products to treat ticks and fleas.

The World Health Organisation considers the insecticide to be “moderately hazardous” and says it can have dangerous effects on the the liver, kidneys and thyroid glands.

The news comes as investigators carried out coordinated raids linked to the Fipronil probe in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Dutch authorities on Thursday arrested two men as part of their investigation into the tainted eggs.

A day earlier Belgium accused the Netherlands of knowing about the potential problems and failing to sound the alarm.

But Belgian officials have also admitted they were notified of a problem and failed to trigger the EU’s international food safety alert system.

A Dutch farming organisation has said that several million hens may need to be culled across 150 companies in the country, and that 300,000 have already been killed.

In Germany and Holland, supermarkets Aldi and Lidl have already taken millions of eggs off their shelves, in what Aldi said was a “purely precautionary” measure.

Britain produces 85% of the eggs it consumes, but imports approximately two billion each year.

The British Egg Industry Council said consumers concerned about the safety of their food should look for British Lion eggs.

“Shell eggs on sale to consumers are not affected and the FSA says that there is no need for people to change the way they consume or cook eggs,” it said.

“All major UK retailers stock British Lion shell eggs and tests have shown that there is no risk from British eggs.”

Spectators Shocked As Usain Bolt Looses Gold Medal To Justin Gatlin in 100m World Championship Run.

#WeGotYourBack #WeGotItCovered #BreakingNews  #TheGuardianNews  #London #UK #Sports #Entertainment #JustinGatlin #100MWin  #UsainBolt #GoldMedal #WorldChampionship

It was supposed to be a moment of unbridled celebration, a glittering farewell to the man who has been a totem for all that is good about athletics amid a miserable chain of corruption and doping scandals. But boos rang out inside the London Stadium as Justin Gatlin a twice-convicted drugs cheat, stood atop the podium where most expected Usain Bolt would be.

The reaction of the crowd was not as raw as it had been the previous evening, when Gatlin’s shock 100m victory rendered most momentarily silent before a chorus of boos took hold. An additional day had calmed passions but athletics again finds its showpiece event eclipsed by debate over drugs cheats.

When Usain Bolt was called up to receive his world championships bronze medal, the result of his first failure in a major final since 2011, the crowd rose to their feet and gave him a rousing applause. The Jamaican, who will retire after the 4x100m relay on Saturday, beamed and clapped all corners of this magical stadium. When it was Gatlin’s turn to assume his position on the top step the American remained stony faced as sections of the crowd made their distaste known.

Sebastian Coe, the president of the International Association of Athletics Federations, looked uncomfortable as he presented the medals, hanging the sport’s biggest prize round the neck of one of its most infamous cheats.

The time of the medal ceremony had earlier been switched from 8pm to 6.50pm in what looked like a hasty attempt to minimise bad publicity. The IAAF insisted it was an administration error rather than anything to do with the raging controversy around the result. But cynics might suggest holding it 10 minutes before the international television feed began and when some spectators were still undergoing security checks to enter the stadium was an attempt to turn down the volume of disgust.

Lord Coe had suggested before the championships began that the sport’s biggest challenge was not doping, but remaining relevant to young people. After spending much of the day fielding questions about Gatlin and what his victory means for the future of athletics he may have changed his mind.

Gatlin is now 35 and his two bans date back to early in his career. The first was in 2001 for Adderall, a drug containing an amphetamine that Gatlin said he had taken since childhood to combat attention deficit disorder. The United States Anti-Doping Agency banned him for two years, later reduced to one.

Gatlin has previously said: “Last time I checked, someone who takes medication for a disorder is not a doper. Other people in the sport have taken the same medication I had for ADD and only got warnings, I didn’t.”

But in 2006 Gatlin was banned for eight years, later reduced to four, when he failed a test for the banned steroid testosterone. When he returned in 2010, Gatlin did not set the world alight with his times but by 2015 he was running quicker than he ever had before and many expected him to produce the nightmare scenario and beat Bolt at that year’s world championships.

Coe said at the time the idea of Gatlin beating Bolt, the only man in history to have run under 9.79sec clean, made him feel queasy. He did not engage in such emotive language on Sunday but insisted that the IAAF had campaigned for lifetime bans for drugs cheats. “There have been two bans in the past, one which got watered down which made it very difficult for the second ban,” he said, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live’s Sportsweek.

“The second ban we went for an eight-year ban which would have in essence been a life ban – we lost that. So these things are suffused in legality. I’m not eulogistic that somebody that has served two bans in our sport would walk off with one of our glittering prizes, but he is eligible to be here.”

ANTI-SEMITIC CRIMES SOARED IN 2016 REPORTS THE COMMUNITY SAFETY TRUST (CST)

#WeGotYourBack #WeGotItCovered #BreakingNews #UK #London  #Religion #Jewish #HateCrimes #AntiSemiticCrimes #CommunitySafetyTrust #DavidDelew #AmberRudd

There were 1,309 reported incidents of anti-Semitic crimes in 2016 – up 36 per cent on the previous year.

With as many as 60 per cent of victims staying silent about their ordeals, the true level of hate crime is even greater.

The scale of recorded anti-Semitic hate crime was revealed in a report by the Community Safety Trust.

David Delew, chief executive of the CST, commented: “Whilst Jewish life in this country remains overwhelmingly positive, this heightened level of anti-Semitism is deeply worrying and it appears to be getting worse.”

Criminals who target Jews because of their faith were condemned by Home Secretary

“It is vital we ensure the safety and security of our Jewish community and this Government will continue to do all we can to stamp out these vile attacks and encourage those who experience them to come forward.”

Communities Secretary Sajid Javid added: “Anti-Semitism must be understood for what it is – an attack on the identity of people who live, contribute and are valued in our society.

British Jews are encouraged to report any hate crime they may have experienced

“Hatred and bigotry must not be allowed to grow without challenge. That’s why it’s so important that we all tackle the attitudes that fuel prejudice and speak out.

“We can never be complacent and must ensure that Britain remains a safe place for Jewish people.”

Labour Party deputy leader Tom Watson said: “The findings of this report are extremely distressing.

“I don’t want to live in a country where any member of the Jewish community feels unsafe, afraid or discriminated against and it is shocking that the number of anti-Semitic incidents is on the rise in the UK.”

The most common type of hate crime recorded by the CST was verbal abuse of visibly Jewish people in public.
One of several incidents highlighted by the CST involved six girls wearing Jewish school uniform on a bus in January.

THE CARTERS ARE EXPECTING TWINS!!

#WeGotYourBack #WeGotItCovered  #BBCNews #EntertainmentNews #USA  #Beyonce #JayZ #ExpectingTwins #Announcement

Beyonce has taken to twitter to announce that her and Hip Hop Mogul Husband Jay Z are expecting twins, with the caption: “have been blessed two times over”.”We are incredibly grateful that our family will be growing by two,” the pair wrote, and “we thank you for your well wishes”.

Rumours circulated a few years ago that Beyonce wasn’t the biological mother of the couples first child Blue Ivy, and that a surrogate mother was used. The proud 2nd-time-mother-to-be, posted a picture of her wearing a veil and proudly stroking her belly with the caption:

“have been blessed two times over”.”We are incredibly grateful that our family will be growing by two,” the pair wrote, and “we thank you for your well wishes”

The post, signed “The Carters”, has a photo of Beyonce with a baby bump, wearing lingerie and a veil.

But that is not the only thing that the Carters are celebrating this year. The Queen bee has been nominated in nine categories for the 2017 Grammy Awards, extending her lead as the most-nominated woman in Grammys history.

The star, 35, is due to headline the Coachella music festival in southern California in April.

The announcement gave no indication of the babies’ due date.

In 2011, Beyonce revealed her pregnancy to fans during the MTV Awards.

She opened her performance of Love On Top by announcing: “I want you to feel the love that’s growing inside of me.”

During the closing bars of the song, she opened her jacket to reveal her baby bump. The camera then cut to Jay Z, who was being congratulated by Kanye West.

Blue Ivy went on to inspire a song on Beyonce’s self-titled album, and appeared several times in last year’s Lemonade.

Jay Z revealed in the lyrics to his track Glory that Beyonce suffered a miscarriage before the birth of Blue Ivy.
