Parents claimed their children died as a result of the vaccine within months of being administered. This in turn caused the initiative to be cancelled.
The damage had already been done. Even as a deadly measles epidemic killed hundreds of children, preventable diseases like polio and diphtheria returned as anti-vaccination sentiment rose across the country.
