In a 3-0 victory over West Ham, a Norwegian striker scores his 35th league goal of the year.
In Manchester City’s 3-0 victory over West Ham, Erling Haaland scored his 35th goal of the year, breaking the previous record for the English Premier League.
The 22-year-old Norwegian striker gave the defending champions a 2-0 lead at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday with a goal in the 70th minute of his first season playing English football.
On Sunday at Fulham, Haaland tied the previous record shared by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole with his 34th of the year. With his most recent goal, he became the Premier League player with the most goals in a season.
“It was a nice feeling as with every single goal I score,” Haaland said. “”Especially to win the game is really important.”
Haaland has achieved an incredible 51 goals in all competitions in just one season with City.
Given that Shearer and Cole established the previous record during a time when the league consisted of more than 42 games, his accomplishment is all the more remarkable. Haaland still has five games left to improve his record.
To honor his accomplishment, Haaland was given a guard of honor by his City teammates as he departed the field.
Alfie Haaland, his father and a former City player, watched from one of the boxes and graciously accepted handshakes of congratulations from everyone in attendance.
“He deserved [the guard of honour],” manager Pep Guardiola said. “All the team deserved it because without the team, he couldn’t do it, but he’s a special striker.

We are thrilled for him since he is fun to work with in general, not just in his capacity as manager. Everyone seems pleased to have him here, in my opinion. When there is a special moment in football, I believe it is important to demonstrate how special it is, as we did with Erling today. To defeat two fantastic top attackers like Andy Cole and Alan Shearer is really extraordinary.
In one of the lowest points in the club’s history, City was demoted to the third tier of English football 25 years prior to the victory.
Although City were far from their energetic best, perhaps with next week’s trip to Real Madrid in mind, the contrast with the team as a whole is remarkable.
