Former President John Agyekum Kufuor, was honoured and appointed a Senior Grand Warden of the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) by the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) in April 2017. This set tongues wagging, as most Ghanaians had mixed feelings about masons, as they are often perceived to be secret occult members with hidden and evil intentions.
John Kofi Agyekum Kufuor GCB (born December 8, 1938) is a Ghanaian politician who served as the country’s president from January 7, 2001 to January 7, 2009. From 2007 to 2008, he served as the African Union’s Chairperson.
Kufuor’s political career has been spent in Ghana’s liberal-democratic parties, including the United Gold Coast Convention and the United Party.
He was a lawyer and businessman who served as a minister in Kofi Abrefa Busia’s Progress Party cabinet. During Ghana‘s Second Republic, he served as a frontbencher for the opposition Popular Front Party, and during Ghana’s Third Republic, he served as a frontbencher for the opposition Popular Front Party.
In the Fourth Republic, Kufuor ran as a candidate for the New Patriotic Party in the 1996 election and led the party to victory in 2000 and 2004. In 2008, he stepped down from politics after two terms in office. He is commonly referred to as the Gentle Giant.
