Changes That You Should Know About This Years A-Level Qualifications

#WeGotYourBack #WeGotItCovered #BreakingNews #BBCNews #UK #England #Wales #NorthernIrland #Education #ALevels ASLevel #ResultsDay  #Changes #EducationSecretary #MichaelGovewith

Thousands of teenagers across England, Wales and Northern Ireland are receiving their A-and AS-level results today. But, in England, there have been changes to this year’s A-level qualifications – the BBC News website sets out the changes.

What is different about this year’s A-levels in England?

Under the new system, students sit all A-level exams at the end of two years of study, instead of taking modular exams throughout the course.

AS-level results no longer count towards A-level grades. No subject will have more than a 20% coursework component and most courses will be assessed entirely through exams.

Resits will still be available, but January exams will be scrapped, so students will have to wait until May/June of the following year for a chance to improve their grades.

Why was this change brought in?

The change was brought in by the former Education Secretary Michael Govewith, the intention of making the exams more “fit for purpose” – or harder.

The new AS- and A-levels syllabuses have been phased in across schools in England from September 2015.

The DfE says: “The content for the new A-levels has been reviewed and updated. Universities played a greater role in this for the new qualifications than they did previously.”

What is happening to AS-levels?

The AS-level is being decoupled from the A-level, which means it operates as a stand-alone qualification and the results do not count towards A-level grades – although in Wales and Northern Ireland, they will still count towards an overall A-level mark.

Provisional figures from the Department for Education show that the number of entries for AS subjects has fallen by 42% this summer.

Association of School and College Leaders general secretary Geoff Barton said it “sounded the death knell for AS-levels”.

“The great benefit of the old system was that it gave students a broader range of knowledge and allowed them to keep their options open for longer,” he said.

“The decision to decouple these qualifications was an entirely unnecessary reform, which is narrowing the curriculum and reducing student choice.”

Which subjects are being phased in when?

This year, new A-level qualifications were taken in:

  • art and design
  • biology
  • business
  • chemistry
  • computer science
  • economics
  • English language
  • English language and literature
  • English literature
  • history
  • physics
  • psychology
  • sociology

Next summer, candidates will sit the new A-level qualifications in the following subjects:

ancient languages (classical Greek, Latin)

  • dance
  • drama and theatre
  • geography
  • modern foreign languages (French, German, Spanish)
  • music
  • physical education
  • religious studies

In the summer of 2019, new exams will be sat in:

  • accounting
  • ancient history
  • ancient languages (biblical Hebrew A-level only)
  • classical civilisation
  • design and technology
  • electronics
  • environmental science
  • film studies
  • further mathematics
  • geology
  • government and politics
  • history of art (A-level only)
  • law
  • mathematics
  • media studies
  • modern foreign languages (Arabic, Bengali, Gujarati, Greek, Japanese, modern Hebrew, Panjabi, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Turkish, Urdu)
  • modern foreign languages (Chinese, Italian, Russian)
  • music technology

New 10 Pound Polymer Bill Will Enter Circulation On September 14 2017

#WeGotYourBack #WeGotItCovered #BreakingNews #TheMirrorNews #UK #Finance #10PoundNote #JaneAusten #MarkCarney #BankOfEngland #WinchesterCathedral #PolymereBill #September14

On 18 July 2017 – the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death – the new, plastic £10 note was formally unveiled.

Jane Austen died in Winchester in 1817 and is buried in the north aisle of the Cathedral. The new note “will recognise her universal appeal and enduring contribution to English literature”, Winchester Cathedral said in a statement concerning the launch.

Production of the new £10 polymer note began last August and the Bank Of England has already printed more than 275 million notes, but they’re will go into circulation on Thursday September 14th.

“There can be no better place to unveil the new £10 banknote, featuring Jane Austen, and there can be no better time than today, the 200th anniversary of her death,” Bank of England governor Mark Carney said at the launch.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE NEW £10 NOTE

  • The new note will enter circulation on Thursday September 14.
  • Production of the new £10 polymer note began last August and the Bank has already printed more than 275 million notes, but they’re not quite ready to launch yet.
  • The new note will be smaller than the current one – but larger than the new fiver. The size ratios will be the same as the ones between the old paper fiver and paper tenner.
  • It will be made of Polymer, the same materials as the new five pound note.
  • The new plastic £5 note sent collectors into a spin as they searched for special editions of the polymer bill – and history could well repeat in the autumn when the Jane Austen £10 hits cash machines across the country.
  • Collectors scrambled to pick up rare editions at the time – with low serial numbers selling for hundreds.
  • The Bank of England is currently looking into ways to make its new notes tallow-free. Saying it will “work closely with banknote polymer suppliers to determine what alternatives might be available”.

New Vaccine Could Be The Cure For Heroin Addiction.

#WeGotYourBack #WeGotItCovered #HealthSkillet #HealthNews #UK #Vaccine #Cure #HeroinAddiction #RhesusMonkeys #ScrippsResearchInstitute #HumanTrials

The heroin epidemic just may finally have the answer it has been searching to find for years. If you’ve been following the process, a vaccine was invented a few years ago. It was tried on rhesus monkeys and it appears to have done very well. The vaccine just might be available for humans soon.

How does a vaccine help with heroin addiction? It actually blocks the heroin. That means the vaccine will keep the user from getting high. So, they won’t bang anymore heroin if it’s not going to do anything. That could eventually cure an addict.

They’ll still have the stuff going through them though. Could it lead to overdoses since the user might be inclined to do more heroin if they can’t get high? I’m sure this and other questions are concerns that researchers have to face.

But they feel good about their vaccine. The research is the product of the Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) in which Kim Janda is the study leader.

“This validates our previous rodent data and positions our vaccine in a favorable light for anticipated clinical evaluation,” said Janda. “We believe this vaccine candidate will prove safe for human trials.”

Heroin

There are other studies for different drugs like fentanyl that is responsible for so many deaths these days. That would be a great drug to beat with so many overdoses that are in the news every day. But will a vaccine be the answer?

It certainly seems possible. The addict has to want it first, which I believe there are many addicts out there who want to quit. They just don’t have the ability. Once they start seeing the effects in action, they can use their resources to buy drugs as resources to get off of drugs. It’s definitely worth a shot that could save someone’s life one day.

When fully armed, the ship will carry at least 40 aircraft and be crewed by 1,000 sailors.

Known as Big Liz, the ship cost £3.1 billion and is first in a new class of state-of-the-art warships for Britain.

This morning, Daily Star Online witnessed her sail into her home port for the first time as the Royal Navy welcomed her to Portsmouth.

The warship is bristling with 30mm cannons and a number of miniguns to fend off enemies.

She also has Phalanx launchers designed to blast away any anti-ship missiles.

New fighter jets the F-35B Lightning II will be packed onto the ship, along with a host of chopper including Chinooks and Apaches.

67% Of Britons Oppose Camilla Becoming Queen

#WeGotYourBack #WeGotItCovered #News  #ExpressNews  #UK #London# #DuchessOfCornwall #CamillaParkerBowles #PrinceCharles #PollResults #PrincessDiana #PrinceWilliam #PrinceHarry #RoyalFamily

Recent poll fund 67 percent of not support the Duchess of Cornwall taking the title when Charles becomes King, with just 19 percent believing she is fit for the role
In a sign of the heir to the throne’s fragile popularity, more than a quarter, 27 per cent, said they thought less of Charles following the recent documentary about his ex-wife.

Camilla

67 per cent of poll voters do not want to see the Duchess of Cornwall become

Just eight per cent thought more of him.
The poor rating comes despite Clarence House’s efforts to rehabilitate the couple in the eyes of the public since they wed in 2005.Princes William and Harry proved far more popular in the survey, with Harry’s American actress girlfriend Meghan Markle regarded by most as a breath of fresh air for the monarchy.

Almost half of respondents thought more of the brothers for speaking out about their mother, showing that open-hearted Diana’s legacy lives on through her sons.

Tellingly, Camilla proved least popular with 35 to 44-year-olds – the generation who grew up with the Princess in the 1980s and came of age around the time she was killed in a Paris car crash on August 31, 1997.

Bodyguard recalls Diana’s suspicions about Charles and Camill

Three out of four people living in Wales – the title most closely associated with Diana, as the last Princess of Wales – oppose Camilla becoming Queen.
Last week a controversial Channel 4 documentary broadcast video footage of Diana from beyond the grave, laying bare the heartbreaking extent of Charles’s infidelity with Camilla.Filmed between 1992 and 1993 when she was 31 and had just separated from Charles, the Princess revealed how the adultery contributed to her bulimia because she did not feel she was good enough for the Royal Family.

The Sunday Express survey, carried out by Norstat last week, asked 2,018 UK-based adults aged 18 to over 65 a series of questions about the state of the monarchy.

Charles and Camilla proved more unpopular with women than men, with 17 per cent believing she should be Queen compared with 20 per cent of men.

Asked if they thought more or less of Charles following the recent revelations, 29 per cent of women said less, compared with 25 per cent of men.

Only eight per cent of adults thought more of him, with 64 per cent saying it made no difference.

Only 19 per cent of voters supported Camilla becoming the queen when Charles becomes the king

Conversely, 48 per cent thought more of William and Harry for speaking out about their mother, despite reports that their “soul baring” had raised eyebrows behind Palace gates. In recent months, the Princes have spoken openly about how they have struggled to cope with their grief over their mother’s death when they were 15 and 12.

Both contributed to an ITV documentary last month in which they revealed the intimate details of their last telephone conversation with their beloved “Mummy”.

The documentary made no mention whatsoever of their father.

Just seven per cent of those questioned thought less of the brothers for sharing their emotions.

Younger people aged 18 to 24 were most supportive, with 58 per cent backing the outpouring of grief.

Fifty-four per cent of women thought they were better off for speaking out, compared with 41 per cent of men.

Princess Diana

GETTY

A documentary about Diana laid bare the heartbreaking extent of Charles’s infidelity with Camilla. Asked whether they thought Suits star Meghan, who has been dating Harry for a year, would be a positive addition to the Royal Family, 33 per cent said yes, while 17 per cent said no.Fifty per cent did not know.

The mixed-race divorcee proved more popular with men than women, with 35 per cent of males believing her to be a blessing for the monarchy compared with 32 per cent of females.

Forty-five per cent of 18 to 24 year olds saw her as a breath of fresh air, compared with 26 per cent of 55 to 64 year olds.

She was most liked in Northern Ireland, where 44 per cent of the population approved of her marrying into the House of Windsor, closely followed by Wales at 40 per cent and London at 37 per cent.

Scotland was most ambivalent, with just 22 per cent supporting her as a future royal.

While Meghan proved popular in Belfast and surrounding areas, Northern Ireland residents were most vehemently opposed to the idea of “Queen Camilla” with 74 per cent against her taking the title, compared with 71 per cent in Wales and the North West.

Londoners were the most supportive on 25 per cent, despite Kensington Palace being synonymous with Princess Diana.

Solicitor General To Consider Sentencing Increases, Where There Is A Racial Element In Sexual Abuse Cases.

#WeGotYourBack #WeGotItCovered #BreakingNews  #BBCNews #Newcastle #UK #RaciallyAggravated #SexualAbuseCases #Newcastle #Rotherham #SolicitorGeneral #Bangladeshi #BritishPakistani #Iraq #India  #Iran #Turkish

Gangs who sexually abuse young girls should be given longer prison sentences where there is evidence of racism, the solicitor general has said.

Robert Buckland told the Telegraph that racism cut “all ways” and should be “front and centre” when it is part of grooming and sexual abuse cases.

On Wednesday, 17 men and one woman were convicted over abuse in Newcastle.

They were mainly British-born from Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Iraqi, Indian Iranian and Turkish communities.

In Newcastle, victims as young as 14 were plied with alcohol and drugs before being forced to have sex by a “cynical organisation”.

Over the course of four trials, 20 young women gave evidence covering a period from 2011 to 2014.

‘Racial hostility’

However, some politicians have questioned why their offences were not seen as being racially aggravated in the courts.

Mr Buckland said tougher prison sentences should be given when it was established that sexual abuse was racially aggravated.

“The law does not discriminate,” he said.

“When it talks about sentencing increases for racial aggravation it doesn’t cut one way, it cuts all ways.

“Where there is a racial element in sexual abuse cases the law is clear that courts can apply a sentencing uplift.”

The trials in Newcastle followed a number of similar cases – including in Rotherham and Oxford.

Mr Buckland expressed concern that fears of being accused of racism might have deterred the authorities from adopting a tougher approach.

“There has been an institutional reticence when it comes to Asian gangs that groom and abuse white girls,” he said.

“Some people have been more concerned about being labelled racist than dealing with child safeguarding.”

‘Work together’

Speaking on Wednesday, Home Secretary Amber Rudd said sexual predators were “not restricted to any single ethnic group, religion or community”.

She added: “I want to be absolutely clear that political and cultural sensitivities must never be allowed to get in the way of preventing and uncovering it.”

Labour’s Sarah Champion said the UK needed “to be upfront that the majority of the perpetrators have been British-Pakistani”.

The Rotherham MP called for the government to research why this is happening.

“The government aren’t researching what is going on,” she said. “Are these cultural issues? Is there some sort of message going out within the community?”

Ms Champion said the “far right” would attack her comments for “not doing enough” and the “floppy left” would call her racist.

“This isn’t racist, this is child protection,” said the MP for Rotherham, where at least 1,400 children were found to have been exploited between 1997 and 2013.

Egg Contamination Scare Hits UK, After Around 700,000 Dutch Eggs Enter The UK

#WeGotYourBack #WeGotItCovered #BreakingNews  #SkyNews #London #UK #Food #Eggs #ContaminationScare #FoodStandardsAgency #Sainbury’s #Morrisons #Waitrose #Asda#ProductsWithdrawn#Fipronil

Around 700,000 eggs from Dutch farms linked to a contamination scare have been sent to the UK – far more than the 21,000 first estimated.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said products affected in the UK were likely to be processed foods that contained eggs among other ingredients.

Several products, including salads, sold at Sainbury’s, Morrisons, Waitrose and Asda have been withdrawn.

:: List of the products being withdrawn

The FSA said investigations indicated it was “very unlikely” that the eggs posed a risk to public health.

Some of the products containing the eggs had a short shelf life and will have already been consumed, the FSA said.

However, other foods were still within the expiry date and are now being withdrawn from sale.

The eggs come from farms implicated in the use of the insecticide Fipronil, used in veterinary products to treat ticks and fleas.

The World Health Organisation considers the insecticide to be “moderately hazardous” and says it can have dangerous effects on the the liver, kidneys and thyroid glands.

The news comes as investigators carried out coordinated raids linked to the Fipronil probe in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Dutch authorities on Thursday arrested two men as part of their investigation into the tainted eggs.

A day earlier Belgium accused the Netherlands of knowing about the potential problems and failing to sound the alarm.

But Belgian officials have also admitted they were notified of a problem and failed to trigger the EU’s international food safety alert system.

A Dutch farming organisation has said that several million hens may need to be culled across 150 companies in the country, and that 300,000 have already been killed.

In Germany and Holland, supermarkets Aldi and Lidl have already taken millions of eggs off their shelves, in what Aldi said was a “purely precautionary” measure.

Britain produces 85% of the eggs it consumes, but imports approximately two billion each year.

The British Egg Industry Council said consumers concerned about the safety of their food should look for British Lion eggs.

“Shell eggs on sale to consumers are not affected and the FSA says that there is no need for people to change the way they consume or cook eggs,” it said.

“All major UK retailers stock British Lion shell eggs and tests have shown that there is no risk from British eggs.”
