Hundreds of Volunteers To Assist In The Early Identification Of Altsimerz’s Disease.

#WeGotYourBack #WeGotItCovered #BreakingNews #HealthNews #AlzheimersDisease #UK #OxfordUniversity #Volunteers

British researchers are hoping to shed new light on the very early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, with the help of hundreds of volunteers.

Using techniques including wearable technology, they are looking for what are known as biomarkers – the very early physical signs of the disease.

These can be spotted long before more obvious symptoms emerge.

They hope it will open up new avenues for tackling Alzheimer’s before the brain suffers serious damage.

Nearly 47 million people worldwide were estimated to be living with dementia in 2015.

The research, funded by the National Institute for Health Research and the Medical Research Council, is being aided by around 250 volunteers, including former university academic Peter Lindon.

He has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and hopes his involvement in this latest research project may answer some troubling questions.

“The importance is hard to overestimate because the question of one’s short-term memory deteriorating has many consequences,” he says.

“The major concern one is principally bothered about is how much time you’ve got when you’re likely to be competent, until the time that you are no longer competent.”

Peter has undergone a whole range of tests, mental and physical, to help researchers identify the biomarkers for Alzheimer’s with early diagnosis possibly the best hope of finding an effective treatment.

Researcher Jennifer Lawson, from Oxford University, says: “Over the last decade or more, 99% of clinical trials into treatments for Alzheimer’s disease have failed.

“We think the reason for that is we are simply trying these in people far too late.

“By the time someone comes to their GP and they think they might have some memory problems and they get a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s, it’s likely the brain has been under attack from this illness for 10 or even 20 years before.”

In a highly-equipped laboratory in Newcastle University’s Clinical Ageing Research Unit, another volunteer, Trish Jones, has undergone an examination of how she walks, known as a “gait test”.

WHO “We Expect The Zika Virus To Spread To Europe By The Summer”.

#WeGotYourBack #WeGotItCovered #BreakingNews #HealthNew #ITVNews #ZikaVirusSpread #WorldHealthOrganisation #Europe #UK

The likelihood of local Zika transmission if no preventative action is taken is “moderate” in 18 countries, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said.

While the UK is deemed to be “low” risk, global health chiefs have urged people to be prepared.

Officials will also continue to be alert to detect imported cases early and provide public health advice to travellers.

WHO said the risk is higher where the mosquito that carries the virus is present such as the island of Madeira and the north-eastern coast of the Black Sea.

Dr Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO regional director for Europe, said: “With this risk assessment, we at WHO want to inform and target preparedness work in each European country based on its level of risk.

“We call particularly on countries at higher risk to strengthen their national capacities and prioritise the activities that will prevent a large Zika outbreak.”

The Zika virus, which is known to cause birth defects, is currently present in 58 countries.

The most recent figures show that 23 UK travellers have been infected after visiting affected regions.

UNICEF Study Shows That UK Is Failing To Improve The Well-Being Of Children From Poor Backgrounds.

#WeGotYourBack #WeGotItCovered #BrakingNews #UK #SkyNews #ChildrenInBritain #Health #Education #Food #ChildPoverty #NationalLivingWage  #UNICEFUK

The Government is reprimanded for its record on helping disadvantaged children eat healthily, exercise and learn.

The UK is failing to improve the well-being of children from poor backgrounds, according to a damning study by UNICEF.

When it comes to healthy eating, the gap between rich and poor is so big that Britain came last.

The UK was also near the bottom on physical activity, while in education the UK ranked 25th out of 37 countries.

British children from disadvantaged backgrounds are now lagging behind Slovenia, Poland and Romania for their ability in reading, maths and science.

UNICEF UK’s Lily Caprani said: “We must be more ambitious for our children. Britain can and must do better.

“What really stands out for the UK is that children who are at the very bottom of the income distribution, so those with the most disadvantages, are doing particularly badly when it come to things like healthy eating, because we are really slipping behind other nations.

“Income inequality is very, very big and growing.

“For those children in the most disadvantaged households, if it wasn’t for things like tax credits to protect their incomes, we’d actually see the biggest levels of inequality in the entire industrialised world.”

Paul Gilling is a PE teacher at a primary school in Newham, East London, where a quarter of children receive free school meals.

He said the challenges there were typical of many poorer communities in the UK.

“The diet of the children is quite poor – high sugar foods, high fat foods, are easy to buy. The children come to PE overweight, or with high BMI index.

“Parents are worried about letting their children out to play by themselves, they are worried about stranger danger. Or they can’t participate in sport because they need to go and do religious studies after school, or their parents are working.”

Children’s groups said the Government needed to do more to address inequality for poor pupils in the UK.

Matthew Reed, chief executive of The Children’s Society, said: “It’s time we renewed the fight against child poverty in Britain and the Government could make a good start by abandoning its planned four-year benefits freeze, which will make life harder for millions of children.”

The Government said its policies were helping to lift children out of poverty.

A spokesman said: “We’re working to eliminate child poverty and improving life chances for children and there are now 300,000 fewer children in poverty.

“We know there’s more we can do and that’s why we’ve introduced the National Living Wage, which is increasing the incomes of the lowest paid.

“All infant pupils can now get free school meals – meaning 1.3 million more children get a nutritious free meal at lunchtime, saving families hundreds of pounds.”

The GMC Is Creating New Guidelines To Cover Acceptable Practice For Surgical And Non-Surgical Procedures.

#WeGotYourBack #WeGotItCovered #BreakingNews #ITVNews #HealthNews #UK #GeneralMedicalCouncil #NewGuidelines #CosmeticSurgery

Strict new guidelines are being put in to place to protect cosmetic surgery patients and clampdown on rogue surgeons who put profits ahead of clients’ health.

It comes as the Royal College of Surgeons said it “will do everything in our powers to protect patients and to stop unscrupulous individuals from practising”.

According to the new guidance, issued by the General Medical Council (GMC), a focus will be put on stopping doctors offering patients “two-for-one” deals, promotions and prizes, and cracking down on anyone making “unjustifiable claims” about procedures.

The guidance will cover acceptable practice for surgical and non-surgical procedures such as facelifts, breast implants and Botox, and anyone who fails to adhere to the rules could face being struck off the medical register.

What provisions are included in the new rules?

  • Doctors must make sure patients are given enough time and information before they decide whether to have a procedure and patients should not feel rushed or pressured.
  • A patient’s psychological needs must be considered before any procedures are undertaken.
  • Doctors must recognise and work within the limits of their competence.
  • Patients should be given written information about procedures being undertaken.
  • Continuity of care must be provided so patients know who to contact if they experience any complications and full details of any medicines or implants being used must be made readily available.
  • Full and accurate records of consultations should be made.

Why are the new guidelines being issued?

According to medical experts the guidelines are being put in place to help protect patients from potentially poor practice.

Professor Terence Stephenson, chairman of the GMC, said: “Patients considering whether to have such a procedure need honest and straightforward advice which allows them to understand the risks as well as the possible benefits. It is a challenging area of medicine which deals with patients who can be extremely vulnerable.

“Most doctors who practise in this area do so to a high standard but we do sometimes come across poor practice, and it is important that patients are protected from this and that doctors understand what is expected from them.”

Health minister Ben Gummer added the guidance was “an important step forward” in improving standards and “ending the lottery of poor practice in parts of the cosmetic industry”.

BREAKING NEWS: Prostate Cancer Medication “Degarelix” Could Be The New Treatment For Paedophilia.

#WeGotYourBack #WeGotItCovered #BreakingNews #SkyNews #HealthNews #Sweden #Stockholm #Medication #Degarelix #ProstateCancerTreatment #Paedophilia

Paedophiles are being treated with medication as part of a groundbreaking study to see whether it can prevent them from abusing children.

In the first scientific trial of its kind, men who are having sexual fantasies about children are being given a drug normally used to treat prostate cancer.

The drug, called degarelix, dramatically lowers levels of the male sex hormone testosterone, roughly to those of a prepubescent boy.

Sky News was given exclusive access to the trial at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.

Paedophiles are being treated with medication as part of a groundbreaking study to see whether it can prevent them from abusing children.

The drug being used is normally given to prostate cancer patients

Lead researcher Dr Christoffer Rahm said the drug had been shown to reduce sex drive in cancer patients, raising hopes that it could also reduce the risk of paedophiles sexually abusing children.

He said: “What is considered to be a negative side effect when you use the drug for advanced prostate cancer – reduced sexual arousal – is the effect we want to have in this context (treating paedophilia).”

The researchers will give a single injection of degarelix to 60 paedophiles who volunteer to join the study. None of the men have sexually abused children.

They will be compared with an equal number of men given dummy placebo injections.

Neither the men nor the doctors will know who is getting active medication and it is the first time a rigorous scientific trial has been done on paedophilia treatment.

Past attempts at chemical castration have been anecdotal and inconclusive.

But degarelix is a newer drug that has an immediate testosterone-lowering effect.

Dr Rahm said: “It’s important we have evidence-based treatment.

“We need to shift the focus away from what to do when the damage is already done on to preventing the sexual abuse happening in the first place.”

Sky News met one young man involved in the study. We agreed to protect his identity and gave him a fake name.

‘Anders’ has not abused children, but fears he might.

He told Sky News: “We didn’t choose to be this way. Nobody would, obviously. And yet nobody accepts us, everybody hates us, we can’t be open with it.

“Hopefully (the drug) will take my mind off these things so I don’t have to be so frustrated and miserable.”

All the men in the study will have a series of MRI brain scans taken while they look at computer-generated images.

Anders’ brain scan shows more activity in areas involved in visual processing and arousal when he sees images of children.

The researchers hope to identify a typical ‘brain pattern’ of a paedophile and that treatment will normalise the scan results.

Gucci Ad Banned After A Complaint Was Made Over The Size Of 2 Models

#WeGotYourBack #WeGotItCovered #BreakingNews #Gucci #AdvertBanned #UnderSizedModels #Complaint #AdvertisingStandardsAuthority #AdvertisingWatchdog

A Gucci advert has been banned by the advertising watchdog because it featured a model who appears “unhealthily thin” and “gaunt”.

The advert included two models – one leaning up against a wall in a colourful dress and another in a yellow outfit sitting on a sofa.

A complaint was made about both, who appeared in stills at the end of a video on The Times website in December 2015.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) upheld the complaint saying the “torso and arms” of the model standing up “were quite slender and appeared to be out of proportion with her head and lower body”.

It went on: “Further, her pose elongated her torso and accentuated her waist so that it appeared to be very small.

“We also considered that her sombre facial expression and dark make up, particularly around her eyes, made her face look gaunt.

Gucci advert ruled irresponsible

A complaint was made about both models in the advert

“For those reasons, we considered that the model leaning against the wall appeared to be unhealthily thin in the image, and therefore concluded that the ad was irresponsible.”

The Italian fashion house has been told the advert must not appear again in its current form.

Gucci told the ASA the advert was aimed at an older, sophisticated audience and that it felt the model appeared “toned and slim”.

It said nowhere in the ads were any models’ “bones” visible.

It said their make up was natural and the lighting uniform and warm to ensure there were no hollows caused by shadows and their clothes were not revealing.

Gucci UK told Sky News: “We take our responsibilities as an advertiser very seriously in the way models are selected for and presented in our advertising campaigns.

“We have noted, but are not in agreement with, the assessment of the UK Advertising Standards Authority, an independent regulator, in relation to one model featured in one image from our Cruise 2015 campaign.

“The campaign itself expired at the end of December 2015.”
