American actress Olivia Munn Opens out about her Battle with Breast Cancer

An American actress, Olivia Munn, recently shared that she underwent treatment for breast cancer in the past year. She underwent multiple surgeries over the course of ten months.

Sharing on Instagram, the 43-year-old star of The Newsroom revealed that she had undergone a double mastectomy as part of her surgeries.

Munn described the cancer as being highly active and rapidly progressing, but fortunately, it was detected early enough for her to have various treatment choices.

She mentioned that she had preferred to overcome the most challenging aspects before revealing the information.

Munn‘s recent health update coincides with her appearance at the Oscars alongside her partner, comedian John Mulaney, just three days ago. They have a two-year-old son named Malcolm.

The actress, known for her roles in Magic Mike, Iron Man 2, and X-Men: Apocalypse, revealed that she discovered her diagnosis through extensive genetic testing and a routine mammogram.

Despite receiving negative test results, Munn’s doctor conducted a thorough evaluation of her “breast cancer risk assessment score”. This evaluation prompted additional tests, including a biopsy, which ultimately revealed that she had Luminal B cancer in both breasts.

‘I feel fortunate’

Accompanied by images and a video from the hospital, she expressed: “Luminal B is a highly aggressive and rapidly progressing form of cancer.

“Thirty days after the biopsy, I underwent a double mastectomy.” My state of health drastically changed overnight, going from feeling perfectly fine to waking up in a hospital bed following a lengthy 10-hour surgery.

“I consider myself fortunate,” she added. “Fortunately, we were able to address the situation promptly, giving me a range of choices.”

She also mentioned that, since the diagnosis, “I’ve only shed tears on two occasions.”

Munn concluded her post by expressing her admiration for Mulaney, her loved ones, and the medical professionals who cared for her.

“I’m incredibly grateful to John for his dedication in researching the details of each operation and medication, including the potential side effects and recovery process,” she expressed her gratitude.

“I am grateful for the support I received before and after each surgery, with framed photos of our little boy Malcolm placed by my bedside, ensuring that they were the first thing I saw upon waking up.”

“I am grateful to the supportive individuals who have experienced breast cancer and those who have introduced me to others who have faced this disease. Their guidance has been invaluable during times of uncertainty and overwhelm.”

‘Putting in tremendous effort’

Mulaney commented on the post, expressing gratitude to Munn for “putting in tremendous effort to be here for us”.

“Malc and I really appreciate you,” he added.

According to UK charity Breast Cancer Now, it is worth noting that while breast cancer is less frequently diagnosed in younger women, a significant proportion of cases in the UK, approximately one in seven, occur in women in their 40s.

“If individuals in the UK have concerns about their risk or family history of the disease, they can consult their GP to determine if they qualify for additional evaluation,” stated Sally Kum, the charity’s associate director of nursing.

“It’s important for women to be aware of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and the significance of regular breast checking. Early diagnosis increases the likelihood of successful treatment.”
