African Bush Doctor (Sierra Leones Finest) Live At The Coronet 2007

If you’re longing for a comeback of the heydays of roots reggae — an era when Bob Marley & The Wailers, Culture, Burning Spear and the late Peter Tosh delivered their best efforts — than this album from Bush Doctor might be a worthy purchase for you. Bush Doctor hails from Bo in Sierra Leone, where he recorded two albums during the early 90s, “Shine” and “Who Like Me”. He was in the midst of recording his third album, “Serious Times”, when war broke out in Sierra Leone, which meant the album had to be completed in Conakry Guinea. A deal with EMI in the Ivory Coast followed, and the album proved a best seller in West Africa. In 1999 Bush Doctor (real name Emerson Njawah) relocated to London, England. Now he comes up with a brand new album, entitled “Jah Way”, which he recorded at Room In The Sky studio in London with musicians Kush and Lerwies and members of the London Afro-Jazz ensemble Soothsayers. The listener is treated to twelve vocal tracks of ‘old skool’ roots reggae with Bush Doctor’s vocal delivery being strongly reminiscent of Joseph “Culture” Hill on “Too Serious”. But there are also other strong influences heard like for example Burning Spear in tracks like “Waiting”, “Warrior” and “Jah Way”, the latter delivered over a sort of Shank-I-Sheck riddim. And also Peter Tosh has been an inspiration for Bush Doctor, not only expressed through his artist name but also vocally as can be witnessed while listening to “Live Up Right”. Worth mentioning is his duet with Gregory Isaacs, which sees the ‘Cool Ruler’ in real good shape. It’s one of the highlights — together with “Too Serious”, “Warrior” and the title track — featured on this nice, but above all vintage reggae oriented album.
